Where is the SPI Summer Workshop.

Jostens South Padre Island Summer Yearbook Workshop will be held at the luxurious Pearl South Padre Island.

The Jostens South Padre Island Summer Yearbook Workshop is the perfect opportunity for your staff to come together, set goals and walk away with a jump-start for your 2020 yearbook. By the time you and your staff leave camp, you’ll have your theme completed, cover designed, ladder planned and sections mapped out in great detail.

What you'll do.

Attend general sessions taught by yearbook expert, Tina Cleavelin. Sessions include theme, coverage, journalism, design and photography. Attend small break-out sessions that pertain specifically to your needs. Create a theme for your book. Learn your creation program. Complete a page ladder. Design sample layouts that incorporate your theme. Attend a 45-minute personal cover-design session with a professional artist. Create a marketing plan. Get your 2019 book critiqued (optional charge applies).
 
 
 

ON-SITE CRITIQUE

An on-site critique is available for staffs who are considering or would like to have their yearbook publication evaluated at camp.  We consider critiques to be the ultimate teaching tool.  These assessments can help you and your staff learn from previous work and help to improve your 2018 yearbook.  On-site critiques will be 30 minutes. You will have the opportunity to discuss areas of strength as well as suggestions for improvement by one of our instructors. This service is an additional $50.
Additional information on preparing for your critique will be included in your registration packet. Sessions are limited so please register early to guarantee your sessions.

How much does it cost to attend Jostens South Padre Island Summer Yearbook Workshop?

Resident Student: $400 (Shared room with up to four students): Includes all instructional materials, computer training, hotel rooms for both nights and all meals starting with dinner on Monday and ending with lunch on Wednesday.
Adviser (Option 1): $700 (Private room): Includes all instructional materials, computer training, private hotel room for both nights and all meals starting with dinner on Monday and ending with lunch on Wednesday.
Adviser (Option 2): $500 (Shared room with co-adviser): Includes all instructional materials, computer training, shared hotel room for both nights and all meals starting with dinner on Monday and ending with lunch on Wednesday

When do we need to register?

Register noW to guarantee your seats and beach front hotel room at this exclusive workshop in South Padre Island, TX. Rooms are limited; registration will close when all rooms are filled; final payment is due by June 15. This workshop offers a unique learning opportunity, personalized attention for all skill levels with numerous instructors and a great amount of collaborative time. Specialized sessions include Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Monarch, photography, leadership, layout, design, writing, business management and cover design.

Can advisers get certified hours?

Attending advisers will earn 26 certified PD hours in yearbook instruction.

What time will we start? What time will we end?

Check-in is from 11 AM to 1 PM on August 5th. Classes start at 1 PM. Classes conclude on August 7th at 3 PM

What if we need to arrive early or stay late?

We can arrange rooms for you at the Pearl. Cost per room on Sunday, Wednesday or Thursday night is $200. Please click the button on the registration form if you would like to add any of these three nights.

What do we need to bring with us?

Bring Yearbook Supplies: Most current yearbook, 2019 completed ladder, 2020 ladder, font and color guide from yearbook kit, camera, preliminary plans for this year’s cover, theme and design. Magazines or other publications for design ideas, pencils, pens, markers, layout sheets, scissors, glue/tape or laptop(s) with wireless internet for your Yearbook Matters presentation.
Bring Survival Supplies: All lines are provided but you may want your own pillow Bring a few bucks spending money for the hotel store, iPod/Pad/Phone, laptop, swimsuit, shower shoes/flip flops, your special pillow, jacket for evenings, snacks and comfortable shoes.

Do we need to do anything else to register?

Besides filling out the registration, you must also mail us a SIGNED copy of the Medical Release form. Yu can click here to download it. Directions for mailing it are on the form.

Can we have our 2019 yearbook critiqued?

Yes! You can have an OPTIONAL CRITIQUE: Receive a thorough journalistic critique of your 2019 yearbook and one-on-one creative planning session with Tina Cleavelin. Yearbook must be received by June 30 for written critique. Mail book to: Jostens Publications, ATTN: SPI Summer Workshop, 2935 Thousand Oaks, Suite 6 PMB 227, San Antonio, TX, 78247.  There is an additional charge of $35 for the critique.

Tina Cleavelin

As the Western Creative Accounts Manager for Jostens Publishing, Tina Cleavelin works closely with advisers and staffs to produce and market their publications. She advised award-winning newspaper, yearbook and photojournalism staffs for 14 years in Arizona and Oklahoma. While advising yearbook and photojournalism staffs in Arizona, she served as the Fall State Journalism Convention Director for the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association. She received the Friends of Journalism award from the New Mexico Scholastic Press Association and the Jostens Leadership Award. Tina continues to remain actively involved in state and national journalism organizations as a speaker and judge.
